Description from the artist:
"On learning that hostilities between Honduras and Nicaragua had closed their borders, we had to change plans. With the information that it was possible to go by ship from El Salvador to Corinthe, Nicaragua, we bicycled to the docks at La Union. There we discovered that all berths had been booked and that incoming ships for the next few days would be traveling north. Therefore when the captain of the port suggested hiring fishermen to row us across the Gulf of Fronseca, we found the idea intriguing. Checking the map showed us that the gulf took about one half inch of space and we would get to see much more of Nicaragua than if we entered at Corinthe. With the help of the captain, we interviewed nine men before we found Raul and Pedro. The next day, they arrived at the dock in a leaky dug-out with patched sails which the captain blessed as seaworthy. I still have doubts about the boat but the two fishermen were definitely seaworthy. They rowed the boat for three days in the heat of the unforgiving sun. When a tricky breeze teased the sails, they whistled for her to return. The heat...the monotonous rhythm of oars slapping the water...the sun...I was ready to get out and walk but the sight of the triangular fins of sharks drifting through the waters nearby kept me in the boat. Then we arrived in swampy, roadless Puerto Morazon, Nicaragua. Fortunately, there was a railroad. We took a train to the nearest road."
